Large aerospace structures, energy components and industrial machine parts often require machining systems that can handle substantial workpieces while maintaining dimensional accuracy. Nidec Machine Tool has introduced the MVR-5X, a double-column five-axis milling machine designed to consolidate machining operations for large components.
The machine was announced in October 2026, with sales scheduled to begin on October 26. Its global unveiling was planned for JIMTOF 2026 in Tokyo.
Five-Axis Capability for Large Workpieces
Five-axis machining allows a cutting tool and workpiece to move along multiple linear and rotational axes. This capability can reduce the number of setups required to machine complex surfaces, angled features and multi-sided components.
For large parts, fewer setups can improve process consistency by reducing repeated clamping and repositioning. A double-column machine architecture also provides a configuration suited to large work envelopes and demanding machining applications.
A New Contouring Attachment
One of the main features highlighted by Nidec is a newly developed compact two-axis contouring attachment. The company states that it delivers approximately 20 times the spindle torque of the previous model’s corresponding attachment.
Higher torque can be valuable when machining difficult materials or performing demanding cutting operations, although actual performance will depend on tooling, cutting parameters, workpiece material and machine configuration.
Manufacturing Implications
The MVR-5X reflects the continuing demand for large-format, multi-axis machining systems that can combine flexibility with production efficiency.
For manufacturers, the key evaluation points will include workpiece capacity, rigidity, tool accessibility, accuracy, thermal stability and the ability to integrate the machine into existing production systems.
The launch adds another option for manufacturers seeking to reduce setup complexity when machining large and geometrically demanding components.
