Bringing Industrial Metrology and Quality Control Within Reach of More Manufacturers
Precision measurement is a fundamental part of modern manufacturing. As product geometries become more complex and customer tolerances become increasingly demanding, manufacturers need reliable ways to verify component dimensions and maintain consistent quality.
Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence introduced ENSPEC, a professional-grade coordinate measuring machine (CMM) designed to make industrial metrology more accessible to manufacturers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Why Coordinate Measurement Matters
A coordinate measuring machine determines the geometric characteristics of a component by measuring points on its surfaces.
Unlike conventional manual measurement tools, a CMM can inspect complex geometries, verify dimensional relationships and compare measured results against a digital design definition.
This is particularly important in industries such as automotive, aerospace, precision machining and industrial equipment manufacturing.
For smaller manufacturers, however, investing in professional metrology equipment can be challenging. Some companies rely on manual inspection tools or outsource dimensional measurement to external laboratories.
ENSPEC is intended to provide another option for businesses looking to bring more measurement activities in-house.
A Bridge CMM Designed for Industrial Applications
ENSPEC is based on Hexagon’s established bridge CMM architecture. Its design incorporates a TRICISION triangular frame, a granite base and air-bearing technology.
The system is available in eight measuring-volume configurations, ranging from 600 × 800 × 600 mm to 1200 × 3000 × 1000 mm.
This range allows manufacturers to select a configuration suitable for different component sizes and inspection requirements.
Hexagon offers three sensor configurations:
- Touch: Contact-based measurement for dimensional features.
- Scan: Continuous probing for surface and geometric inspection.
- Speed: Non-contact laser scanning for selected measurement applications.
The system also supports fixed and articulated sensor configurations, helping operators access different component features.
PC-DMIS Integration
ENSPEC operates with Hexagon’s PC-DMIS metrology software.
Software integration is an important part of the measurement process. A CMM does not simply collect coordinates; measurement programs must define inspection features, measurement strategies, reference systems and reporting requirements.
Using an established metrology software platform can help manufacturers build inspection workflows that can evolve as production requirements change.
Hexagon also highlights an upgrade path in which sensor configurations can be expanded while retaining the same machine platform.
What Manufacturers Should Consider
Bringing measurement in-house can improve control over inspection schedules and reduce dependence on external measurement services.
However, purchasing a CMM is only one part of establishing a reliable metrology process.
Manufacturers must also consider:
- Environmental temperature stability
- Machine calibration and verification
- Fixture design and component positioning
- Measurement strategy and probe selection
- Operator training
- Measurement uncertainty and traceability
A machine’s nominal performance does not automatically guarantee reliable measurement results in every factory environment.
The Role of Metrology in Digital Manufacturing
Modern quality control increasingly connects design data, manufacturing operations and inspection results.
When measurement data is linked to CAD models and production records, manufacturers can identify dimensional deviations earlier, improve process control and create more consistent quality documentation.
Hexagon ENSPEC reflects the continuing effort to make professional coordinate measurement available to a wider range of manufacturing businesses.
For companies moving beyond manual inspection or outsourced measurement, accessible CMM technology can become an important step toward a more controlled and data-driven production process.
